He's 4 years old and loves his mirror. But he um, has narcissism. Shorty grinds on his mirror (parakeets don't have penises) because he thinks it's another bird or he loves himself that much.

Kinja'd!!!

(Maybe Quasi NSFW) My grandma is the true owner of this little fella and we don't know what to do. Any avian enthusiast Opponauts?

Nothing you can do, honestly. Many keets will do that with some hanging toys as well.

There isn't a whole lot to do about it really, not that I'm really aware of. You can move the mirror to a spot he can't get to it, but it's not really going to stop him if he wants it that badly. He genuinely thinks the mirror is a different keet.

My girlfriend had one that would become very vocal with a mirror, but he would only get the mirror for about an hour a day or so, but around sunset, he would see his reflection in the window.

He's quite possessive. I thought in the Budgie world females were the territorial ones.

Also yes, I have heard OVER TWO HUNDRED distinct vocalizations. Sometimes he makes "sentences" such as "TWEE DE DE DEET" means "GIVE IT NOW", "BR BR WRBL WRBL" means "Get away from my turf". Shorty is quite smart and will turn over his mirror ladder if it is face down.

Yes, keets are very expressive pretty often. My girlfriends old keet had a great many different vocalizations amd were was very smart, though they didnt know too much about him. He flew into a window where her dad worked, and her dad went outside to get it, and they just kept him because he was an expensive bird to be flying around that kind of neighborhood.

He could speak a couple words, but generally keets dont pick up any words. I think a trained one would have a vocabulary of less than 15 words max.

A female would actually do the same sort of NSFW things to a toy or mirror. My girlfriend is the avian enthusiast, but Ive picked up plenty of it myself in helping to take care of them. They dont have any birds at the moment, but Im sure my girlfriend will push to get one in the future again.

What was her parakeets favorite food? Shorty's favorite is celery with the leaves attached.

Funny enough, he got plenty of junk food. Bread, goldfish, doritos, and fortune cookies were very high on the list, but were treats really. He mostly just got bird seed primarily.
